Lenten rose
* Common name: Lenten rose
* Botanical name: Helleborus orientalis
* What it is: A late-winter-blooming perennial flower with glossy evergreen leaves and hanging bell-shaped flowers, usually in rose, pink, white or violet.
* Size: 18 inches tall, 2-foot spread
* Where to use: Cluster in any shady or partly-shaded bed. Excellent as groundcover under trees.
* Care: Snip off old leaves when brown. Clip flower stalks after flowers fade. Fertilize in spring with Flower-tone or similar long-acting flower fertilizer. Once established, watering and spraying not needed. Seldom needs division.
* Great partner: Any big shade tree. Lenten rose tolerates shade and roots, and it makes a nice, low-maintenance flowering carpet.
