Creeping sedum ‘Atlantis’
* Common name: Creeping sedum ‘Atlantis’
* Botanical name: Sedum takesimense ‘Atlantis’
* What it is: ‘Atlantis’ is a Korean-native, ground-hugging, winter-hardy, succulent groundcover that has heavily variegated white and green leaves and a fair showing of little yellow flowers in summer. It’s fairly drought-tough and not a target of bugs, deer, or other animal pests.
* Size: Grows six inches tall and spreads slowly to two or three feet in a few years. Space 18 to 24 inches apart.
* Where to use: Excellent low groundcover or edging plant for any hot or salty/rocky area, such as along walks and driveways or around mailboxes and light posts. An ideal rock-garden plant. Does best in morning sun and afternoon shade to avoid scorching the variegated leaves. Needs well drained soil.
* Care: Water the first season to establish the roots, then ‘Atlantis’ needs water only in dry spells. Fertilizer usually not needed, but an early-spring scattering of a balanced, granular fertilizer is optional. Creeps but not aggressively. Shovel out and transplant or give away sections growing beyond where you want.
* Great partner: Pairs well with purple salvia and/or black-eyed susans. Also makes a colorful groundcover under and around boxwoods, dwarf goldthread falsecypress, and most any dwarf green- or gold-needled conifer.
