Foamflower ‘Sugar and Spice’
* Common name: Foamflower ‘Sugar and Spice’
* Botanical name: Tiarella x ‘Sugar and Spice’
* What it is: A shade-preferring, April-blooming perennial with white-pink, bottle-brush flower spikes. Best feature: the glossy, cut-edged leaves that have beautiful burgundy cross-like markings in their centers.
* Size: 10 to 12 inches tall, 2-foot spread
* Where to use: Eastern foundation beds or along the front of any shady garden. Great in woodland gardens, too.
* Care: Trim browned-out leaves at winter’s end and snip off flower spikes once flowers fade in early summer. Water weekly in a drought. Fertilize with Flower-tone or Holly-tone in spring. Divide in early fall, if needed.
* Great partner: Plant in gaps between afternoon-shade shrubs such as hydrangeas, azaleas and rhododendrons.
