Pentas ‘Butterfly’ series
* Common name: Egyptian star cluster ‘Butterfly’ series
* Botanical name: Pentas lanceolata ‘Butterfly’
* What it is: One of the best annual flowers for attracting bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Plants put out umbrella-shaped clusters of small flowers throughout summer. The series comes in eight different colors, including white, deep rose, pink, lavender, red and mixed.
* Size: 15 to 18 inches tall, space 12 to 15 inches apart.
* Where to use: Any sunny garden, especially out front or for adding spots of season-long color to a butterfly garden. Also does well in pots. Full sun best.
* Care: In the ground, water twice a week for the first six weeks, then weekly the rest of summer when it’s dry. Fertilize at planting and in mid-summer with organic granular Flower-tone or once or twice a month with a water-soluble flower fertilizer. Snip off browned-out flower clusters to neaten the plant and encourage continuing bloom. Yank when frost kills in fall.
* Great partner: Blue junipers are good evergreen partners. Blue salvia and purple angelonia are good annual-flower partners.
