Korean spice viburnum
* Common name: Korean spice viburnum
* Botanical name: Viburnum carlesii
* What it is: A flowering shrub with some of the most fragrant flowers of any plant, blooming heavily in white for 3 to 4 weeks in April to early May. Plants produce red fruit clusters in summer. In fall, leaves turn burgundy before dropping.
* Size: 6 to 8 feet tall and wide.
* Where to use: Plant next to a patio, near a window or within nose range of any walkway to take best advantage of the spring fragrance. Add one to any mixed garden or mass three or more to make a shrub border. Full sun to part shade.
* Care: Keep damp the first year, then water usually only needed in a drought. No pruning needed unless plant outgrows its space, then trim lightly right after plants flower in May. A scattering of balanced, organic, granular fertilizer once in spring is helpful but not critical. Fruiting is heavier when more than one plant is used.
* Great partner: Creeping phlox or creeping veronica are good low underplantings. Petunias or verbena add color in summer during the time between viburnum’s spring flowering and fall foliage.
