Abelia Pinky Bells
* Common name: Abelia Pinky Bells(R)
* Botanical name: Abelia hybrid
* What it is: A compact flowering shrub with trumpet-shaped pink flowers from mid-summer to early fall. Pinky Bells™ has fingernail-sized, glossy green leaves that emerge reddish and larger flowers than most abelias. Holds leaves partway through most winters.
* Size: 3 feet tall, 4 feet wide.
* Where to use: Sunny borders, around water gardens or along all but the shadiest house foundations. Grows in full sun to part shade.
* Care: Scatter a balanced, organic granular fertilizer around the base of the plants at the end of winter. Keep damp the first season, then water needed only in drought. No pruning needed unless it’s outgrowing the space. If a trim is needed, do it at the end of winter before new growth begins.
* Great partner: Good perennial partners include purple salvia, dwarf Russian sage and purple coneflowers. Abelia’s rounded habit also pairs well with ornamental grasses.
