Deutzia ‘Nikko’
* Common name: Deutzia ‘Nikko’
* Botanical name: Deutzia gracilis var. nakaiana
* What it is: A low-growing, spring-flowering shrub with an arching habit and clusters of white flowers that nearly cover the plant in May.
* Size: 2 feet tall, 4 feet wide.
* Where to use: ‘Nikko’s’ trailing habit looks especially good massed along the top edge of a wall. Also can be used along walks and driveways, under trees, in triangular groupings in foundation beds or massed on banks. Best in sun or part shade.
* Care: No pruning needed so long as size is OK. If size control is needed, cut back by up to one-third right after plant finishes blooming. Fertilize in spring with a granular, organic fertilizer such as Flower-ton or Plant-tone.
* Great partner: Tall uprights make a good backdrop, such as ‘Dragon Lady’ holly, hydrangea ‘Pinky Winky’ or crape myrtle.
