Crocus ‘Ruby Giant’
* Common name: Crocus ‘Ruby Giant’
* Botanical name: Crocus tommasinianus ‘Ruby Giant’
* What it is: An early-spring-blooming bulb with purple-violet flowers and golden pistils. Rodents seldom eat this crocus.
* Size: 4 to 6 inches tall.
* Where to use: Mass 4 inches apart in a rock garden, border bed, under trees or in beds where you’ll later plant annual flowers. Sun to part shade.
* Care: Plant late September through mid-November. Let foliage brown and then cut it off. Or mulch over top in May. Scatter beds with granular bulb fertilizer such as Bulb Booster or Bulb-tone in spring and/or early fall. Can be dug and divided after foliage browns if you want to spread out bulbs in a few years.
* Great partner: Early-spring golden daffodils (i.e. ‘February Gold’ or ‘Tete-a-Tete’) bloom around the same time and echo the color of ‘Ruby Giant’s’ pistils. Witch hazel ‘Arnold Promise’ is a good big brother.
