Green Tulips
* Common name: Green tulips
* Botanical name: Tulipa viridiflora
* What it is: May-flowering bulbs that are planted in fall. Green or “viridiflora” tulips are distinctive for their beautiful “flames” of green that run up the petals of the upright cup-shaped flowers. Comes in pink, rose, white, gold and more. Pink ‘Virichic’ and ‘Groenland’ are two of the nicest.
* Size: 16 to 20 inches tall. Plant bulbs 4 to 6 inches apart.
* Where to use: Mass out front in your highest-profile spot – by front doors, in front of front windows, along front sidewalk, etc. Full sun.
* Care: Scatter organic, granular bulb fertilizer such as Bulb-tone or Bulb Booster over the beds in early spring and early fall. Snip off flower stalks when blooms fade but wait until foliage browns or at least yellows before cutting it. Water not needed except in unusually dry spring after foliage emerges.
* Great partner: Dwarf boxwood or poked in leadwort or creeping phlox groundcover.
