Rose Julia Child
* Common name: Rose Julia Child
* Botanical name: Rosa ‘WEKvossutono’
* What it is: A disease-resistant, heavy-blooming floribunda rose with large, double-petaled, old-fashioned flowers of creamy gold. Flowers are licorice-scented. Cooking icon Julia Child personally chose this Weeks Roses selection to be named after her. Won a 2006 All-American Rose Selection honor. Best blooms in June with a good repeat in September.
* Size: Rounded, bushy habit of 3 to 4 feet tall and wide.
* Where to use: One of the best gold bloomers for a rose garden or can be mixed into any sunny foundation or island garden. Makes a colorful hedge as well.
* Care: At end of winter, remove all but 4 or 5 pencil-sized stems evenly spaced around the plant, then cut those back to 8 to 12 inches. In season, snip off spent flowers down to the first set of five-leafed side shoots. Fertilize monthly with a granular fertilizer formulated for roses from April through July. Soak weekly during hot, dry weather, wetting the ground, not over the leaves. Spray only if needed for intolerable bug or disease attacks.
* Great partner: Purple salvia or lavender are good perennial partners. Purple angelonia and white euphorbia are good annual partners. Boxwoods and hollies are good evergreen partners.
